18 Sept 2020 · Coroner Kevin McLoughlin · West Yorkshire (East)

The coroner's concerns

  1. 1. promotion of suicide methods

“may be actively promoting a particular method of committing suicide and hence breaking the criminal law by assisting suicide”
  2. 2. undermining medical treatment and family efforts

“which enter discussions with troubled and vulnerable young men such as [name redacted] serve to undermine the benefit of both the medical treatment provided to him and the constructive efforts of his family to restore his health”
  3. 3. legitimising self-harming behaviour

“At a time when society is seeking to safeguard the mental health particularly of young men suffering from depression, it is counterproductive to permit such sites to bestow a legitimacy on self-harming behaviour”
  4. 4. availability and promotion of lethal substances

“It is harmful for potentially lethal substances to be made available and promoted as an effective method of killing oneself”
